August 20, 2014

This turned out to be quite a long day. We started out at a leisurely pace because out ferry trip to Labrador wasn't schedule until mid morning. I went to the quick store (the only one in town) and got a six pack of Alexander Keith's IPA. It is a very drinkable brew. I am worried about the locals because the shelves were packed with Coors Light and Bud Light. That is definitely crappy beer. It isn't even cheap. Jeez, these guys have it tough.

Our passage to Labrador was a little over an hour. The seas calm so the trip was comfortable for everybody. We spent the time in the top deck lounge singing songs and playing cards. The day was foggy, so there wasn't much to see. We landed in Blanc Sablon and headed out to Pointe Amour for lunch and a tour of the lighthouse. We climbed to the top and saw the Class 2 fresnel lens still in place, but powered by a 200 watt light bulb. There wasn't much to see because of the fog. After a nice coffee and pie treat we headed out to Mary's Harbor. The trip was interesting because the road was pretty much like the Dawson Highway in Alaska - gravel. Slow going. We ended up in Mary's Harbor about 7:00 pm and hopped on a boat to take us to Battle Harbor. The passage was a little rough and some in the group were a little queezy, but I had a great time standing in the lee of the cabin on the rear of the boat telling jokes. Here Ginny is warming her hands off the diesel heater in the cabin.

Battle Harbor was a major cod fishing port. It has been transformed into a National Historic Site with nice accommodations. We ended up in a huge room with a fireplace which made it quite nice. The weather sucked, but we did little more than have a nice dinner and retreat to our accomodations.
