After church this morning we packed a picnic lunch, grabbed our cameras, picked up Pat and headed to the Smith Oaks Rookery at High Island. A friend of ours had been there a couple days ago and said it was a sight to see. It took quite a while to get there because there was an hour long wait to board the Bolivar Ferry in Galveston. But the wait is well worth it because the ferry ride is fun. This rookery is temporary home to a large group of Roseate Spoonbills, egrets of various sorts and a pot load of other migratory birds. There are several viewing platforms which are quite close to where the birds are nesting. You can stand there and watch and shoot photos while the birds are completely undisturbed. There were some other photographers out there with impressive systems. I figure they were shooting 600 mm or so with a doubler. That is quite some magnification. Although it would be nice to have a rig like that, I am not sure what it is good for except shooting still things at long range. Nonetheless, it would sure be a hell of a lot of fun to try. |
