With Windows XP approaching unsupported status, we decided that this would be a good time to get a new computer for Ginny. She was pretty excited about the prospect. Her old one was getting pretty rickety. So we headed up to Frys and got a nice HP Pavilion All In One. The way it works in our family is that she gets the computer and I have to spend all the time getting the stupid thing set up. We also got to thinking after we got back that our old, noisy, sounds like it is about to self destruct laser printer needed replacing as well. We headed back to Frys and got an HP network laser printer. I did manage to get everything working and properly configured. That means tomorrow Ginny can take command of the starship and be off and running. I have to admit that the new machine is really very nice. It uses Windows 8.1, which is confusing to me. Will we ever get back to the old A:> prompt?

Larry, I believe there is a free upgrade to 8.1 I haven't seen 8.0, but a friend who does IT at NASA said that it was not well liked because Microsoft was trying to make it look like apple stuff. He also said the the 8.1 version was much better received. I think the main thing was to make the desktop available again. But I could be wrong.

We shall overcome.

I hope you can adjust to Windows 8.1.

Yeah, 8,1 has a start button type of thing. The good news is that you can set it up so that you get the familiar desk top if you want (and I want). I am thinking way back to DOS 1.1 where I had an A: prompt.

I saw somewhere Windows was putting back the 'start' button in 8.1. A: prompt ? No one has an A drive anymore do they
