Today we visited the site I had been looking forward to visiting the most. It is Grinder's Stand in Tennessee where Meriwether Lewis died on October 11, 1809. The story of his death is controversial, but it was most likely a suicide. Lewis and Clark made their epic expedition to the Pacific Ocean and back in 1804-1806. It was an unprecedented voyage of discovery which was documented in detail in the Journals of the captains and several of the enlisted men. This photograph is of his grave marker and memorial, just a couple hundred yards from the location of Grinder's Stand, an inn on the Natchez Trace. I would say that Lewis was my second favorite member of the expedition. John Shields was the first. He was a gunsmith, blacksmith and all around highly valuable member of the group. |
