We spent a very nice day in Natchez. This town is a terrific place to visit. Lots of things to do here. We started the day at Melrose Plantation which happens to be a National Park Service site. This photo is of the stables and carriage house from across the pond. It was overcast, tough lighting. We also visited the William Johnson house which was a story of a very successful Mulatto business in Natchez during the first half of the 19th century. He was particularly interesting to historians because he kept a detailed journal. We also visited the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians. They built mounds. That seems to be what a lot of Indians did. The highlight of the day, however, was an evening concert at the Stone House. It was performed by Joe Stone whose family has owned the house since the 1870s. He served some nice wine with the concert then took us on a tour of the house which was filled with lots of very cool stuff. Much of it is original and a lot of it is period pieces and collectables. He is also a collector of maps and he had some 17th century maps on display. We spent several hours talking with him after the concert. All in all a very nice day. |
