Robert took us up to Kenesaw Mountain National Battlefield today. It was interesting. We hiked to the top of the mountain which was good exercise. Kenesaw Mountain was a battle where the Confederates under Johnson were holding out to protect their rail line and hopefully stop General Sherman's invasion of Georgia. After quite a bit of bloodshed, Sherman decided to do what he did many times in his campaign: he simply went around Johnson's defenses and continued south toward Atlanta. Johnson was forced to withdraw since the Union army had flanked him. The rest is history. Sherman captured Atlanta, marched to the sea then turned north into North Carolina where eventually the army he was opposing surrendered.
