This was our final day in South America. Our flight back to Houston didn't leave Lima until 11:50 pm so we had plenty of time to take in some more sights. We booked a tour out to Pachacamac, an ancient site just a little south of Lima. This particular site was occupied for a couple thousand years and was primarily a place of worship. The major structure was the temple of the sun, pictured here. This was an Inca structure. It didn't look at all like Machu Picchu. That was because it is in a desert are where there are no big rocks to quarry, so the Inca built with local materials which included adobe. It was also painted red, and you could see remnants of that red paint in various places.
After this visit we decided to hang out in the hotel with our friends from the trip and wait for our transfers to the airport. This was a very memorable vacation. Lots of bucket list items were seen. We had a lot of fun and (accidently) learned a whole bunch of stuff.
This ends our overseas travel for 2011. We are going for a week in Oregon and then a road trip to see Richard, Christiane, Robert and Laura over the Thanksgiving holidays . I think we will hit a bunch of national parks on this one so it may well last up to three weeks. Don't worry kids, we aren't planning to spend all that time crashing with you. Motel 6 becons.
