today we toured around Rotorua for a while. This area is unique in the southern hemisphere because it is the oly location with geothermal activity. We visited Te Puia which is a Maori village that includes the largest geyser in the southern hemisphere. This is it here. It certainly isn't as high as Old Faithful, but it belches forth for almost an hour when it goes off. As you walk around Rotorua, you come across lots of geothermal vents. We were told that they are still appearing today quite unexpectedly. The city has an odor of hydrogen sulfide from these vents.
