I have been thinking about upgrading my pocket camera for a long time. I have a Canon S-70 which is pretty good. The real shortcoming of that camera is its poor high ISO performance. At 400 the photos are very noisy. Several months ago Canon announced its new G-11. It is an interesting product because it has 4 megapixels FEWER than its predecessor the G-10. I have been a strong advocate of channeling more development dollars into improved high ISO performance rather than pushing the megapixels of the sensor. Well, dpreview.com published its review of the camera today. I think the reviews these guys do are first rate. Nothing like tons of data and comparison photos to make your point. They liked the camera and confirmed that the high ISO performance is pretty good. So now I am stuck on whether to buy it or not. I think I am going to do it. Canon is even running a $50 rebate on the thing. Decisions, decisions, decisions... p.s. - Don't tell Ginny I am thinking about it.

you got that one right, John!

The question do you need it, is totally irrelevant.
Do you want it, that question is the one that all men use in decision making.
The default answer is yes.

Interesting comments from everybody. Larry - here is an article I found on CCD vs CMOShttp://www.dalsa.com/corp/markets/CCD_vs_CMOS.aspx I have no clue on the subject. As far as performance is concerned, the G11 is quite good at high ISO. I have read the DPReview article a bunch of times. Versus the G10 it is lower resolution (of course! 10 vs 14 megapixels.) I guess it comes down to what a person likes overall. I have been a canon guy and have never been disappointed. Now the question is do I really need it!

This electronic revolution has created a monster in the number of decisions that must be made. Good luck with the outcome.

that's a tough one john. small sensors=always more noise. i've heard the G10 is better than the 11. have you heard the same? also, have you held one of these? they are big and heavy. not my kinda "pocket" camera.

No advice from me. I do kind of wonder about this having a CCD.
I thought I read somewhere that ALL Canon's latest still cameras used a CMOS
for better low light/less noise photography.

I've been considering upgrading my old Sony V1, which makes nice looking pictures but has abysmal battery life. I read the Canon review and liked what I read except its not really pocketable. I like the optical viewfinder, like the controls, but I wonder if now isn't the time to move up to 4/3rds or micro4/3rds from Olympus or Panasonic. Much better high ISO performance. but they aren't really pocketable either.
