I like all birds. And we have a lengthy "list" of sightings on our ranch. But, I guess my favorite of all birds is the purple martian. They eat lots of mosquitoes; they churple and gurble the most beautiful notes; they seem to like people; they are very graceful and acrobatic flyers; and they appear to enjoy flying just for the h*** of it.
For me, spring is not complete until they arrive at our martain house. Every year I'm antsy until they take up residency to raise their families. The excitement is in the air when the scouts come. Then we have a big celebration, with an extra glass of wine, when the martian pairs settle in. This year we have 3 pairs, so there is plenty of room left.
It's one of my great joys to sit in the rocker on the front porch and watch the purples fly. All is right with the world.
Following are a few quick snaps of the purples flying around their house in Central Texas.
John, We have had purple martins for several years. We have gourds, for the last two years have tried a house like yours but have no luck of having martins build in the house. Love you pictures.
