This is a study of the many moods, shapes and forms of the beautiful Mission Espiritu Santo in Goliad, Texas. Established in 1722, the mission became the center of a very active community. The men took care of the cattle, worked the soil for planting, and built stone structures. The women spun wool to use in making the clothing, made clay pots for cooking and storage, ground corn into meal, and harvested the crops.

Over time, ranching became the major activity. The mission, at one point in time, claimed over 40,000 head of long-horned cattle. Thousands of head were supplied in support of the American struggle for independence. The soldiers of nearby Presidio La Bahia (see "Moods of a Presidio" gallery) served as protection for the mission and its cattle. The mission was beautifully restored by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s. I hope you enjoy your visit.

Mission Espiritu Santo is part of the Goliad State Park & Historic Site which serves as a hub for visits to the nearby Presidio La Bahia, the Ignacio Zaragoza Birthplace State Historic Site, Fannin Battleground State Historic Site, the Goliad Historic District, and Mission Rosario State Historic Site.

Activities in the park include camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, boating, swimming in a Jr. Olympic pool, nature study and historical study.

The park is located on the San Antonio River, 1/4 mile south of Goliad on US Highway 183 and 77A
