Kreische Brewery, A Texas State Historical Site

In 1860, a German immigrant, Heinrich Kreische, began building a brewery in the ravine below his house, which was built on land he had purchased in 1849. The brewery was situated to take advantage of natural spring water which was used as an ingenious water system to transfer ingredients through a nine-step brewing system. The brewery is reputed to be the first brewery in Texas. By the middle of the Civil War, Kreische's "Bluff Beer" was being produced on a large commercial scale. By 1879, Kreische Brewery was the third largest brewing operation in the state.

When a new batch of beer was ready, Kreiche raised a banner emblazoned with the traditional German phrase "Frisch Auf!" meaning "Freshen Up!". This was an invitation for major social events with people gathering on Kreische's grounds to enjoy the beer, shooting competitions, large picnics and dances.

This is a wonderful site to visit. I plan on doing this when I get to Texas. I noticed some comments to the photographers page by a John Chandler. Coincidentally I had an ancestor that lived in the La Grange area in the 1800's who had a husband by the name of John Chandler originally from the North, Massachuetts.
