The Cattle Egret is often found in dry grassy habitats, unlike most herons which are associated with shallow water. It feeds on insects, especially grasshoppers, and is usually found with cattle, horses or other large animals which disturb small creatures which the egrets then catch.
They are probably the most abundant heron in the world, and because of this, their beauty is often over looked. These are from my ranch in Texas, mostly taken in the late afternoon, while sitting on my front porch.

These are lovely shots, John, of the cattle egrets. I have a special fondness for them, too -- they remind me of the "pampas" of Guanacaste, Costa Rica, which traditionally has been a cattle raising area. The egrets hang out for hours on end among the cattle, riding around on their backs, picking insects off them. Then at night they roost in a tree along the river, making the tree look like it's been covered by snow, so dense are those birds.
