The battleship USS Washington (BB-56), the photo was to illustrate an article on the ship being caught in gale force winds while transporting 1570 troops homeward at the conclusion of WW2
The Washington was commissioned in 1941 and spent her first year in the Atlantic before being transferred to the Pacific theatre where she saw extensive action. in 1947 she was placed in the reserve fleet and scrapped in 1961
