The French liner SS Normandie either entering or leaving New York
The Normandie entered service on the North Atlantic route in 1935, at the time the largest and fastest liner afloat.
With the outbreak of WW2 in 1939 the Normandie was interned in New York, in December of 1941 she was transferred to the US Navy and renamed USS Lafayette with work commencing to transform her into a troop ship
I February of 1942 a spark from a welding torch ignited a fire which spread rapidly, this caused her to capsize at her berth. she was raised but repair costs were prohibitive, she was scrapped in 1946
