A view of the Vesuvius Funicular railway shortly after it opened in 1880
The railway carried tourists to the top of Mount Vesuvius so that they could view the crater.
The railway operated until it was destroyed during the eruption of 1944. There have been several proposals for a replacement but none have succeeded.
