Christchurch will rise from the ashes

Dunedin

At 12:51 today a magnitude 6.2 earthquake devastated Christchurch. The quake was 5 km beneath the port town of Lyttelton. The iconic Christchurch Cathedral has been demolished. The confirmed death toll is 39 but expected to rise as many people are trapped in collapsed buildings.

23/02/2011 Death toll has been revised upwards to 183.

Our thoughts are with you all across the ditch at this time. I have every confidence that Christchurch WILL rise again, as will as its beautiful cathedral. In the meanwhile, this is a most beautiful graphic. V

Glad to see you are okay John. The earthquake and devastation are surreal..... I feel totally numb and wish I could do something to help.... My thoughts are with everyone affected.... another sad day for New Zealand

potent image to mark this major tragedy...photos online show the city is reduced to rubble, so many dead and many more injured.....one quote saying 'Lyttelton is unliveable,' which makes me fear for John Rendle...hope you are OK in Dunedin..
