Mudlarks.

Portsmouth harbour

Mudlarks were children who entertained travellers by retrieving coins they threw in the mud of Portsmouth Harbour. Boys and girls would scramble in the mud to find the money.

The police regarded mudlarking as begging and tried to stop it.

The building of the new bus terminal in 1976/7 put an end to mudlarking.

I was never a mudlark but as a kid I collected discarded
glass soda bottles to turn them in for a few cents each.

Life was a bit tough back in those days Larry, but it was a good life.

And they probably needed that money.
