In that photo he's actually on the bowsprit, not the foremast.

Hi, Richard (all)
I remember that day well, I was stepping onto the top-deck (after a swim) when we heard the almighty thump.
Nelson spent a few weeks in sickbay. Since he was in my top I was allowed to visit him. He had terrible bruising and you could see the marks of the rope net on his shoulder and arm.

I never had the bottle for venturing along the yardarms. Respect. When I joined in Sept '56, the talk all was of a boy (Nelson '89) who'd fallen from the 1st yard earlier that summer, and landed in the net, unscathed!) Apart from Evolutions (when everyone had to face the climb) I steered clear of the mast.
