Beachy Head

Beachy Head is a beautiful place. White vertical cliffs rising to 535 feet above the sea. Very sadly about 80 people each year fall to their death from these cliffs. Occasionally people drive their car over the edge, sometimes with unwilling passengers. Some are suicides, some are accidents, some are murder. On January the 9th 2000 Paula Ramsden mother of 2 young children fell to her death during a night time stroll along the edge with her husband. Her friends and family said she hated heights and would never walk in a place like Beachy Head. Her husband had recently increased her life insurance to Ł225,000, he was also having an affair. Mr Alan Graze was the coroner at the inquest into her death. He decided that although he believed Mr Ramsden was not telling the truth about the incident he would record an "open" verdict on her death. This means nobody will be charged with causing her death.

I’m so sorry Suzanne and I can’t begin to imagine your pain. So many people get better with help and learn to cope with life. I don’t know your son or how he was feeling but I’m sure he wouldn’t have hurt you if he felt there was any other way at that time. I hope he’s now at peace and you are able to get through each day. I hope it will get easier day by day. I took an overdose before I was 18 because I knew I couldn’t cope with adulthood but that attempt broke my parents’ hearts. Life has been a rollercoaster with so many depressive episodes but I’m still here and now they’re gone. They protected me all my life and I finally feel I can go without hurting them although I believe they are looking down on their family. I love the rest of my family but my depression and lack of practical skills is very difficult for them to understand and I am a burden.

Mental Health Services in this country are now virtually non existent and as time goes by they are getting worse and worse ,such a shame really when we did at one time have excellent facilities but this country has gone to the dogs.

SP, I would say your comment applies to the absolute worse case of people who wish to die. I say that as I do not like the term "commit suicide". But please allow for lots of people who are not the worst case. People who have been stopped before they jump, given help, and gone on to live a fairly good life. There are some who say they are going to leave this life, but have no intention of doing so. As much as it is human behaviour to end your life if you wish. It is also human behaviour to stop somebody doing so if you can. To help someone in trouble is a basic human instinct. Every case is different, every situation is different. I appreciate everybody's right to choose their life or death. But I could not stand still and watch somebody take their life. I sincerely hope I am never in that position. Either wanting to go, or trying to stop someone from going. There is so much to say on this subject, and anything I say will be disputed by someone else.

The comments here largely show that people do not understand folks who opt for the long drop. Why don't people consider those who have to recover the bodies? Because they are in such constant pain it overwhelms them, they are focussed on one thing only, making it stop. Why don't they consider their loved ones? Same reason, or perhaps they don't have anyone. Why don't they seek help? They probably have, mental health services in this country are often worse than useless, locking people away or drugging them or both. It alienates people rather than including them. It's a sin. Come off it, you're trying to guilt trip a person who already feels as bad as it is possible to feel....you're adding to the problem. If they've had a bad experience or relationship, why not simply walk away? Walk away from what? Most of what they want to walk away from is in their own heads, you can't walk away from that. Why don't they just help the elderly, or homeless or someone? This is the dumbest comment of all, life is not a tradeoff, you can't put your mental condition on hold and just do something else, people are not machines. People jump because they are in pain, total pain, constant pain, day and night, unbearable, destructive, physical and mental......no amount of 'cheer up it might get better' is going to alleviate that. Open your eyes people, for some life IS torture, literal torture, 24/7 and with no hope of end. One of the tragedies is that there is no way to get help when you've made that decision, so places like Beachy Head will always be used, yes it's not 100% certain, nothing is, but it's the best option for many.....much better than not jumping. Understand the pain people, it is not done lightly.

Just sometimes depression can come out of nowhere with no warning. You can have a happy life and everything is going good for you. You may not even realise nor others around you what is happening to you and if you haven't been threw it before then how would you know you were depressed ?. People do not choose to feel so lost and empty, it's tiring. People do not choose to feel so empty and like there slipping down a long dark tunnel, each time they take a step up they go back down again looking at the bottom which seems to be getting nearer and knowing if they touch the bottom it's all over. Why would anyone want to feel like that ? When I read people's advice on how to help themselves I can see the right in that but they must also know that it is NOT that easy, simple tasks become major work. A tortured soul only thinks of wanting some peace. They are to empty to think of what is left behind and only of wanting peace. Regardless of how many people say you are not alone, speak to someone, the fact is you are alone trapped in a mind that's tired and worn. How can you talk to someone when you can't get the words out nor explain when you just don't know ? I am sad when I think of what led people to the edge, sad for the loved ones left behind but sadder still that this was the only way they felt that could bring them some peace. I won't give advice to anyone who comes to me because there mind is not mine. What helped one may not help another but what i do is listen or just even sit in silent just so they may know they can speak if they want. I was lucky and now I live with the guilt of feeling like that but now I know I will fight my very best to not feel like that again. Nearly a decade of my life is foggy, it's a long hard road.

Know the place very well. My parents lived there (in eastbourne) for a number of years and we would go to the top now and again. Once saw the results of a suicide. The body of a woman and two dogs lay on a ledge some 200feet below. It is so sad that people feel they must do this. We all suffer from depression from time to time. Most people can gradually lift themselves out of it without tablets. But for some, especially if a number of negative situations occur in their lives, will decide that they cant cope. But death is by no means a certainty, you could end up with multiple injuries and be in great pain for the rest of your life. Perhaps people who feel they must do this should think about the poor brave folk who have to remove the broken bodies from the cliff bottom and also the friends and family they will hurt for a lifetime. I often think if you feel depressed the answer can be found by going out and doing a favour for someone, a kindness. Whatever your station in life you can help a friend or a family member or even a total stranger and their gratitude helps in a small way to make you feel better. Do enough favours and a flow of goodwill will return to you lifting any depression. Humour also helps. None of us really know why we are here and what is our purpose so why not try and enjoy whatever we do have however little. Besides that its beautiful up at Beachy Head, stunning views especially if the sun is shining. Watch the gulls and the Kestrels and it must make you feel priviledged to be there. Enjoy every moment. Dont spend too much time thinking about the future or the past just enjoy the now. Good luck everyone.

If you walk the beach at the bottom of the cliffs, near the light house, you see engine after engine, from all of the cars that have ploughed off. I even saw a mobility scooter today, and a rather recent Audi TT in pieces.

Its quoted often in such cases that no-one could understand why, well that just says the person made the effort to the last in a way so that no-one noticed their struggle, or were people around them just too busy with their own rose tinted view of life to notice. No-one wants to destroy themselves on rocks, it's not a choice one makes. it's a choice made for you by circumstances when those circumstances are out of ones control. To say it was wrong for someone to end it is to insult their rationale and therefore their intelligence.

I can understand if someone wants to end their life if they have been diagnosed as terminally ill, but otherwise - why? If relationship problems or money worries, there are usually ways to sort it or help around the corner..such a waste. A very beautiful girlfriend of mine has just done it by jumping off Beachy Head - what a waste, no one knows why. If they feel their life is over why not decide to dedicate it to helping the sick, old, animals in need - they might rediscover a point in life through service to others. Everyone gets depressed occasionally, if short-term depression they should be talked out of suicide attempts and helped as they will probably find life is worth living once over their temporary problem. And there is also help for longer-term depression, once the cause is found. Don't give up, we are hugely privileged to be chosen to be here on earth, and life is so fleeting. It can be wonderful, much better to devote your energies to helping others to find it wonderful, particularly those in dire need such as children who don't have long to live.

Well actually John I would still choose Beachy Head as my suicide preference. I am sure it has a higher mortality rate than taking an over dose for example, and one would have to be very unlucky to land on a ledge and not make the full 500ft drop. Suicide is a choice, it is a right to end ones life.

Seems that even falling into the sea doesn't preclude later discovery, I read in paper recently of a body that turned up on Hastings beach some nine days after the person jumped from Beachy. Not sure a barrier would stop everyone, people still manage to get past the barrier erected round Clifton Suspension Bridge.

Palimpsest, Most times they do not fall in the sea. The cliffs slope away from the edge a little. And the tide is out most of the time as well. It can be quite messy, a very sad job for the recovery people. The only way to stop this would be to put a high fence along the edge. The cost would be enormouse and it would ruin such a beautiful place.

I am home now from hospital after a failed suicide attempt, I have support from people and professionals who know I think only of suicide, but am left alone. I have pills, knives etc but will choose a cliff, not beachy head where I will most likely be stopped, rather a secluded and peaceful place where I can end the suffering and pain in my own time and my own way. People say they care, but mostly they care about their own conscience and future.

I know someone that took his life jumping from beachy head.it is just too painfull for words what us the family are left to try and live with.it has tore our hearts out.we got no warning whatsoever of him wanting to do this.he was so loved by family and friends which makes it so sad and confusing that he couldn't speak to us.if you are thinking about suicide please think that life is full of ups and downs.and you never know what around the corner.you may fall in love or win the lottery?but this is just so painful for people left behind its unbearable .try to be strong and talk to people.they will anything to help you but you can t keep it locked inside as it can only make you feel worse.

Whether you're a homeless person or a member of the Royal Family life is a very precious gift. When it inevitably ends you're a long time dead. I have been through a lot of bad shit in my life, but it doesn't matter how bad things have got I believe it is not the end of the world. suicide is such a vile word. If you are considering doing it you should try to spare a thought for all the people you leave behind who love you and how devistated they will be. Maybe professional help would help the situation. Try to enjoy what time you have left. None of us are here forever.

I have been reading "life on the Edge" by "Keith Lane". As someone who lost my husband in April this year,he had MS and jumped off Beachy head, I have found this book a great comfort. I can relate totally to the Authors feelings. It is such a good book and im sure it has helped alot of people.

You acknowledge the great sadness and waste of some suicides whilst acknowledging for some people it may indeed be an option. I think the erosion there would have to be documented over hundreds of years to show a large difference. I will be visiting there in a few months I will take some pictures of the pub and post them here.

I always find it very sad when a place changes but there appears to be little documentation of how the changes occurred, or what the place looked like before. Beachy Head is undergoing continual erosion, which is a natural consequence. Does anyone have any old photos of how the cliff top may have looked before and after certain incidents of erosion, particularly landslides, occurred. Also, I remember visiting in 1985 when there was a pub at BH. I heard it was destroyed by fire in the mid 90s. Does anyone have any pictures of it - inside or outside?

jat, I do agree with you that anything that might help these unfortunate people should be tried. But what I said applies just as well to signs telling them that they might be severely injured in an attempt to end it all. They will not stop to read them by the time they have got to Beachy Head. Look at my picture titled "A life saved". A young woman was running for the edge, it took all the strength of those police men and woman to hold her down. At that point in her life nothing else would have stopped her. It was very sad to watch that happen, I sincerely hope that she was persuaded to change her life and forget about suicide. I only posted that long distance photo to show how awful an attempted suicide is. I destroyed the other photos I had showing more detail, it did not seem right to keep them.

John. You seem to have misunderstood my point. I am not suggesting to put signs up saying "jumping is not allowed". That's ridiculous. I suggested signs which show what could be the consequences in a failed suicide attempt. I think it could make someone think twice before taking the plunge. Maybe it was a stupid suggestion but it might make someone in that frame of mind think twice. I agree that vigillance and support is needed but I also think that vulnerable people should be made very aware that not everyone who jumps will be successful in their quest to end their lives and the tragic outcomes if they survive could be most unpleasant. At the end of the day if someone is that determined to end their life they will find a way of doing so and no amount of support will prevent them

jat, very sadly by the time a person has arrived at Beachy Head with the intention of ending their troubled life. They are not going to be influenced by a sign saying "Jumping is not allowed". I think the help and vigilance of volunteers is the best way to help these people.

Just watched Beachy Head Suicide Spot Live Video. Features man who survived after jumping and he is now severley disabled. Perhaps thats what is needed up there. Posters informing public that people who are intending to jump off with the intention of ending their lives are not always successful. Maybe photo shots of horrific injuries sustained by other people who acted upon suicidal feelings would deter people? And maybe if they saw pics of what the coastguards have to deal with i.e clearing body parts maybe they would think twice. I couldn't imagine anything worse than jumping off and surviving only to end up trapped in a world of disability as well as utter despair. It would then be almost impossible to escape. It's very sad to see the crosses and flowers which announce a loss of life. I think more needs to be done in way of prevention. Notices might help.

I considered jumping off BH once but was put off when a psychiatrist said I could jump off and survive. The thought of having to live in a vegative state as a result of my own doing put me off. Are there many cases of people who have jumped and survived?

i once knew a beautiful man - he killed himself at beechyhead i was only 25 he was 29 it took me over 20 yrs to face the pain and to realise no-one and nothing would have prevented him killing himself - i tried when he told me he didn't want to go out with me anymore because he was going to kill himself and he didn't want me to be hurt by it! - he made me promise not to tell anyone - i broke my promise but he couldn't be helped or stopped - it was reported in the local paper - i have never been to beechyhead and i don't suppose i will ever go there - its that time of year again and i wish so many things ......but somewhere in my heart i know he - his soul or whatever one calls it - he's ok and i know he's been around me still love and blessings to all xxx i am sorry for all the losses all we can do is share our prayers and concentrate on the beauty of the souls we knew.thank you for sharing with me - beech head.

guest after reading a number of books on NDE's, and based on personal experience, to commit suicide is only the beginning of one's suffering. so if you know that someone might be contemplating suicide you should do all in your power to stop them and get them the help they so desperately need to make them see that live is worth living.

From the bottom of my heart I can honestly say that the friends and family left behind are the ones with prolonged agony. Left feeling shattered and confused with no level of understanding or solace. He was bright and did succeed first time. He is so deeply missed and we wish things were so very different. Enybody trying suicide, where possible, should be convinced that there is another happy time around the corner. The chaplaincy team are wonderful people. If only they could be there at the time and spot needed every thime.

If a person is mentally ill, and trying to suicide, they deserve all the help they can get to stay alive and be treated. Generally, people who are quite clever and have a temporary problem that leads them to suicide, succeed first time. A large number of people talked out of suicide, then have a happy, normal life. It is normal human nature to help someone in trouble. There are a lot of good people in this world.

Do you really think that if someone is stopped from committing suicide and they try again that they will be allowed to do so? I don’t believe that. I think people will interfere again and they’ll be hauled off somewhere and be drugged into submission.

Nobody is forced to live against their will. A lot of people suffer a tragedy/problem and cannot cope with life. There is a multitude of other reasons people end up here on the edge, ready to jump. Many people saved here are given help, and decide that life is worth living, and are grateful that someone cared. Others still cannot cope, and do try again, and do suicide. They alone make the final choice.

We need documented proof , John, since when I visited Cabo De Roca in Portugal, local guys were proud to hold the first place and even asked me to hang around for a while to "enjoy" spectacle of routine suicide. It was just too windy and rainy that day, so nobody showed up for the flight...
