I was lucky enough to squeeze into this trip out of Hyannis at the last minute. Although the seas around the Nantucket Shoals area were relatively calm, the length of the trip and the fact that I spent most of my time looking through my binoculars and camera led to my first experience with sea sickness. It wasn't too bad, and between bouts of slight queasiness I managed to see all the species on the trip list and get a few photographs. The only new bird for me was a very cooperative Lesser Black-backed Gull (sorry for overexposed photos, but the smell of chum wasn't helping my nausea at that point). A number of tantalizing Jaegers were seen and were probably Pomarine given the season, but they were just too far away to positively ID (or photograph). Thousands of feeding Greater Shearwaters and Northern Gannets with an ample supply of Black-Legged Kittiwakes were fun. I couldn't get any decent Fulmar shots, unfortunately. I photographed a provocative loon with a seemingly pale straw bill and no apparent dark culmen, but the angle of the bright sun and distance from the boat at full speed make the shot crummy and unsatisfying. I can see a slight upward angle to the peripheral lower mandible, but it isn't pronounced enough to call it a Yellow-billed. Alas, just another one of the many Common Loons seen on the trip.
