Cannons over Narrows1stjohns.jpg

The Narrows are the protective entrance to the Harbour. European ships have sailed in here since the 1500's. The earliest record of the location appears as São João on a Portuguese map. It was during this time that Water Street was first developed, making it the oldest street in North America. On August 5, 1583, Sir Humphrey Gilbert claimed the area as England's first overseas colony under Royal Charter of Queen Elizabeth I.

I really like this photo. You have some very nice scenes in your galleries and I will be checking back from time to time. Newfoundland is a beautiful place with very friendly people and I certainly hope to make another visit there.
