Notgeld 1917-1921

Emergency money was issued in Germany during the First World War. In times of war gold, silver and copper are often hoarded or withdrawn from circulation for use in the war. That creates a shortage of change. As a consequence towns, villages and even the Free State of Sachsen started issueing its own money. Coins were being struck in a wide variety of cheap metals and other suitable materials; aluminum, zinc, iron, lead, porcelain, wood, cardboard, rubber and leather !! After the end of the First World War Germany dived into hyperinflation and it was not until 1923 that the use of emergency money finally faded out.
