The best I learned on this photo walk is use of the selective dropper to highlight the blue of the boat and bumpy it - as don’t foget the blacks and vignette (is on the iPad)

focus for me is now the heart, the emotional connection with my project on Matheson - there is peace and serenity in bearing witness to the beauty of sunrise of Mathewson. However, there is this dichotomy of the two sides of the banks of the warren river. Upper Mathewson is the Barrington River, while lower Mathewson near the Blount seafood is the Warren river that eventually goes to Rhode Island Sound. Question is how to inject that dichotomy into my calendar project for this year.

Need to better understand this phenomenon- but 200 mm lens close on sunny day, but reflective light bring out the inner beauty of the flower - similar to the picture in Seattle

Always check your shutter speed - the number one cause of blurry picture is to low of shutter speed - especially with heavy zoom lens. Eh Vey, you think I would have learned that by now

While this photograph is not a true landscape, but I have been pondering about the very classical view of landscape photograph where you find a scene and wait for the light and conditions to be perfect. The virtues are being able to visualize the condition ahead of time, patience, and little bit of luck. For me, I am more of photographer in the moment but love finding a scene and quickly make a decision. This is such as situation. I saw the bird on approach. From prior experience, I knew in the calm water there would circles after the landing of the bird.

Leading lines add depth of field and you don't aways have to have a key point of interest following the rule of thirds.

Each dog that joined my pac has had its own unique personality. Mac is like Cino - a spitfire. A puppy who barks when he does not get what he wants. If he finishes a bone, he will bark until Bean voluntarily gives up his bone to him. Bean is patient, usually waits out Macs behavior and then get what he wants. He will vigorously defend his food, but gladly switches bones and happy to observe.

Cino is 90 pounds - so I have always been careful with her interactions with puppies. Mac is by my estimate about 42 pounds and he is ready to take on the full cino. Mac love engaging cino in play. Mac is a tail biter - hence his nickname Mac Attack for sneaking up on dogs at play group biting their tail and running away.

About the photograph

Despite a shutter speed of 1/320 - we did not freeze the action, but does the blur take away from the emotions that the shot conveys. Not sure. Would love it if there was sharpness around Cino face, but a pan was not going to achieve that

Lesson learned - make sure you are shooting at higher shutter speed with the my speed demons and playing chocolate lab and spitfire labradoodle puppy.

I had the great pleasure and honor to sit next to Greg Gadson, a war hero, actor, and photographer. We both spotted this photograph as landing into National Airport. We talked about his artwork and cameras. One of the more pleasant flights in a long time. His story is inspirational.

My nightly commute because of one way streets requires me to cross the upper bridge then turn left to cross the lower bridge.

Jet lag - in the last month, I have been to

Washington DC twice, San Francisco, Hershey, St. Louis, and finally Kansas City for 30 hours.

Spent the day sleeping - woke up to this beast looking at me ..

If he could speak - I am sure that it would be something about getting out of bed to throw his chuck it..

Going to DC for meetings has taken on a whole new meaning - got to have dinner with the niece and went to Georgetown cupcake where we have to wait 15 minutes in line to buy cupcakes! (but they were very good).

An 18 year old bottle of scotch

On the eve of my birthday while enjoying this 18 year old single malt scotch, I am asking my self what was I doing 18 years ago - when this scotch began its journey.

18 years ago, I was moving into a new rental in beautiful Hanover, NH. I got my first dog, Magoo - a real sweet, yellow lab. My career was largely an unknown, but I was working on one of the largest studies conducted on end of life care in the US (price tag of $28 million dollars). Very lucky to play pivotal role and publish many papers. Now about 150 papers later, so much has changed and so much in health care has not changed. The best things are my two beautiful nieces, I rediscovered the joys of photography, and 85% of time I really do work that I am committed too and very passionate. What is not know is whether we have a better health care system in my older years?

So I going to savor this scotch and this crazy dog (Moki) who is running around the yard with piece of orange canvas that is his passion in life.

Meet Lucky

Lucky was found abandon in a building - starving. He as been adopted by a local nursing home and his new surrogate

mother is none other than -- Mary, the central character of Making Rounds with Oscar The Cat by David Dosa.

So far, Lucky is just getting use to being loved and getting 4 square meals a day.

He is a lucky boy.

March 22 2010 - My first full day of spring --

Today, I gave an opening keynote in Detroit for the Jewish Champlaincy Program - The closing key note was by best selling author Gale Sheehey, who has book coming out on caregiving in May. Got home at 1 am - very tired, but glad to be home.

Moki circling back to check in on why I was walking so slow on the snow which was falling on ice.

December 31 2009 - this is the last post for my 2009 PAD. It is not one of my best shots, but it does tell a story. Despite the steady snow, all Moki wants to do is retrieve. We played outdoors until my feet were soak and I was covered in snow. He is currently laying down in his crate not understanding why I can't spend hours out doors throwing the flying squirrel. Think about the simplicity - all that makes him happy is running after an orange piece canvas (a ratty one at that). He runs. Times his leap to catch it in mid-air. An act of perfection. He is very proud of that feat. If everything could be that simple, but alas it is not or is it? This exercise of trying to take a picture a day has taught me so much in the last five years. Some days are crap shots - really just a mental note of the day for me. It does remind me to stop, take a look at this day, and remember this will not happen again. Spend time in the moment. Watch the snow, that sunrise, or your obsessed dog jumping at the perfect moment to grab that ratty piece of orange canvas that is worth pure gold to him. Happy New Year! Now on to 2010, a new decade --

So on to the sixth year of doing this - forcing myself in this hectic existence to stop and be part of the day. That is why I keep doing this.

November 17 2009 - An advance copy of Making Rounds with Oscar: The Extraordinary Gift of an Ordinary Cat by my friend, David Dosa. Oscar is a cat who lives on the dementia unit at a local nursing home. He holds vigils with dying persons where he sits and often comforts the family. A brief story in the NEJM led to this excellent book by David. I got to read early drafts -- as soon as I finish the grant, I am going to read my advance copy. It holds the longest record for a tallest building in state of RI - 428 feet, 26 floors

This is the Oscar the cat (who attracted national attention for his holding vigils

with dying NH residents) in his ginger bread house and the Oscar the Cat

fund raising calender that is now being sold at Steere House.

Hopefully, we will raise about $1000 dollars for the care of the

six cats at Steere House Nursing Home who provide comfort and joy

to the 120 nursing home residents.

After ten years of being in my current house, I have decided to invade the dog room!

Spent the day setting up a dual screen work station, printer, wireless connection of my 6 year old BeoSound for which I will stream Itunes, and a wall of photographs including one special photograph from Bandito! Wynn, aka Bandiito was the inspiration for the dual screen approach. Thanks!

Finally, done traveling until after Thanksgiving. Now time to enjoy a beautiful RI fall and get some work done in my new space.

Finally, I feel like we are walking out of the fog into beautiful day..

The first 5 months of 2007 was like being lost in the fog, full of one

tough journey after another.

Cindy, my RA, was diagnosed with breast cancer.

My beloved chocolate lab, mollie had to be euthanized.

One of my clinical jobs involved considerable problems. I quit.

Despite my best efforts, I failed. I don't like failure.

Finally, the fog is lifting ..

Cindy surgery was very successful with all lymph nodes being negative. S

o she is now officially a cancer survivor.

I am gaining perspective. Still don't like failure, but I moved on.

No dog can replace Mollie.

Next spring, Java is going to be an older brother.

I don't think that he knows what he is in for.

He really tortured Mollie as a puppy.

Payback is coming in form of puppy. Working names are Kona or Latte.

Starting in June and now really finalized today, I feel like that I have walked out of the fog into bright new year.

Yep, there will be foggy days in the future.

Perhaps in 2007.

But, I am just going to saivor good news, acceptance, and the anticipation of a new life in the Teno household.

This picture of the day is all my nieces idea! She wanted to express her frustration with traveling yesteday. She went from having a massage to the crazy world of dealing with cancelled flight and airline staff that was not helpful at times. At one point, potentially we were not going to get to Amsterdam at all!

Travel on Wenesday was totally crazy.

First, they shut down the Pittsburgh airspace to practice for an air show! So this was delay 1 and led to a fatal delay.

Second, thunderstorm meant that our flight from Pittsbugh to Philadephia was delayed to an arrival time post

when our flight for Amsterdam would leave. My favorite line of the day, "We can get you to Amsterdam on Monday - maybe..oh.. I guess you are out of luck."

Quick thinking on the spot and help from David Dosa - found a South West Flight that would get me to Philadelphia about 45 minutes prior to the next flight to Amsterdam. On the spot, bough a ticket. We made it with 1/2 hour spare. Our luggage is due tommorrow.

Than.. Equipment failure, change to 757 with total chaos of seat reassignment. Wrong galley - spent an hour on the ground while they tried to repackage the galley.

Than.. we were number 30th in line for take off.

It was all worth it to me. We had a great day in Amsterdam. I am so pround of my neice. She is such a trooper. Furthermore, she is a creative and special soul BTW, Happy Birthday - She turned 18 this week!

Life is good.

Day 1 - We had an Indonesia food for lunch, spectacular meal with wonderful vegetables and tofu. Took a canal boat ride and stopped at the flea market where my neice purchases some cheap, but great clothing. Ended the day walking to the I am Amsterdam sign. Wondeful day!

Last night, we celebrated with dinner at Alfornos, one of the best resturants in RI!

Vacaton starts on June 5th..

Alfornos is a five star resturant that asks you to order dessert at the time of selecting your dinner so

they have adequate time to prepare. What a wonderful meal and company!

4th week of the Beach dog walk project. I have been taking the dogs to a different beach in RI where we either walk on the beach or go for a walk by the beach (i.e., dogs not allowed on the beach).

After the storm yesterday, the surf was pounding - beautiful day.

Gabi and Java enjoyed the chance to soak up the sun..

Today was holiday - So I was home playing the game of trying to steal Java's "yellow toy"

(Sorry, yellow toy does not have a formal name). Usually, I hide it from him then tell him to find it..

Initially, he not giving it up.. but sleep provided the perfect opportunity..
