Oscar the Nursing Home Cat

Oscar lives on dementia unit at Steere Hourse Nursing Home. He holds viigils for dyiing perons of dementia, but only for the last 2-4 hours of life. A colleague, Dave Dosa, wrote a story about OSCAR in the NEJM. In the two days after publication, OSCAR was the top news story -making every major network, including CNN, BBC, and others. While some newspaper joked about OSCAR as the grim creeper, we know that Oscar offers comfort to dying persons and their families. I had an Oscar-like cat, Smokey, who climbed on me and purred every day during the awful year I went through chemotherapy. That was 15 years ago, and I am certain Smokey had a key role in healing.

I am a "cat person" and always felt that they sense much more than we realize. I only wish that I could shake Oscar's paw. V
