Oscar surveying over his kingdom - the 3rd floor nurses station at Steere House. Today, I was reminded that while Oscar has gotten the headlines = the real story is about the culture that many staff has worked over the past few years to create a caring and loving place for persons with advanced dementia. For some reasons, that is not a headline story = rather, pychic kitty or "death cat" has really held the facination of public and media. The boring, mundane but really important story is the hard work of a few who had a vision that persons with advance dementia would be in a unit, where they are loved, well cared for, and treated with dignity. Not an exciting headline - probaly will never make the front page or any page of our local newspaper, the PROJO (for Providence Journal), but that is the story - Love, fortitude, and a small number of persons who had vision have dramatically impacted so many.
Ok, I will get off my high horse for the night..
