Photography is an art of subtraction—presented with a complex world, we identify and organize objects of visual interest and (ideally) do our best to eliminate everything else. It’s this last point that’s often overlooked. The best pictures often work as much for what’s not in them as for what’s in them. When I first approached this scene in Maine, my focus was a small central aspect - but I stood back to take an overall shot, thinking nothing about it. Editing the raw image in Lightroom, I realized the whole in this case may be better than the one part that I was focusing on. Your eye can wonder through the patterns and shapes of the tree routes. There is complexity to the photo, but is it eliminating things that are distraction.
