Wisconsin elk

Historically elk lived in most of Wisconsin but were extirpated by the early 1900's. In 1995 25 elk were brought from Michigan to seed a new Wisconsin elk herd.
Currently this herd is located near Clam Lake and numbers around 145 animals. These photos were taken in the spring and fall of 2009 and are all wild Wisconsin elk.
Many of these elk are wearing radio collars so their movements, distribution, and habitat usage can be monitored by the Wisconsin DNR and associated groups.
