The common loon is a remarkable bird made specifically for life in the water. Loons are powerful underwater swimmers with their legs set far back on their bodies.
They look unsteady on land and and mainly go there just to build nests and lay and incubate their eggs. Once the eggs hatch it's back to the water for the adults and chicks.
Loons feed primarily on fish, but crayfish, frogs, and other things are also part of their diet. For many people the haunting call of a loon is a powerful symbol of the north country.
