The tricolor car indicates that this particular train is the Rossiya. Just as airlines have a flagship daily long-haul flight on which they use their nicest airplane, such as JAL’s Tokyo-New York flight, the Trans-Siberian’s flagship train service is the No. 1/2 between Moscow and Vladivostok, which I rode for one leg of my trip. The differences between the various trains are small but important for Russian travelers: nicer linens on the beds, pewter and glass tea mugs, extra little lights over the beds. Most significantly, the better trains have the nicest Provodnistas (the carriage attendant ladies who stoke the hot water boiler, bring you tea, clean the bathrooms and make sure you know exactly how many minutes you have at each stop).
