There are no longer steam locomotives pulling trains in Siberia, although several hundred are kept in "strategic reserve" by the military, and some of them sit abandoned on sidings near smaller stations. The Trans-Siberian rail system began conversion to electricity in 1927, and all of the engines I saw hauling trains were electric, although diesel engines are used for moving cars around at yards.
