shorts for pork*

Upon arriving in our destination highland village after a grueling ten day trek, my porters and I had a strong appetite for some meat. I decided to treat them to a barbeque, if it could be arranged. I had plenty of Indonesian rupiah, but knew that it was not particularly useful in this remote place where the cash economy had yet to take root. For a couple of days, we tried negotiating, but kept running into the problem that buying a pig would cost some chickens and buying some chickens would cost a pig. Eventually, my guide did some sweet talking and called some favors, and we ended up trading some of our clothes, some rice, a lot of tobacco (I had stocked up on this valuable currency) and a bit of cash for a small pig, which the villagers killed and cooked for us. In this picture, one of the villagers effortlessly shoots an arrow into the young pig's heart, dispatching him in a few seconds.
