Dhaka, located on the Buriganga river in the lower Ganges Delta, is Bangladesh’s capital city. It has a population of about 12 million, but like other crowded, rapidly expanding cities in poorer countries, it feels much smaller. Textiles is one of the major industries, and button down shirts, some identical to those you might find at Brooks Brothers, can bought on street corners for less than two dollars. The city is filled with markets of all kinds, from huge modern shopping malls to old multistory complexes packed with electronics and pirated software. Metal bits of all sorts are another big seller, and there are streets lined with shops selling nuts and bolts, steel rods and various spare parts. The streets are crammed with over half a million cycle rickshaws, the principle mode of transportation for the majority of the city’s residents.
