West Rim Of The Grand Canyon

The "West Rim" of the Grand Canyon is far removed from the Grand Canyon, South Rim (where nearly everybody visits) and the Grand Canyon, North Rim. While traveling south on Hwy 93, between Hoover Dam and Kingman, you take the road to Dolan Springs and drive about 20 miles to a dirt road turn-off for the "West Rim"; note, this dirt road is about 18 miles of very poorly maintained roadway. Once you go past the state owned land you will find a paved road that takes you to the visitor's center run by the Hualapai American Indian Tribe.

You cannot drive your own car to see what few scenic viewpoints are there, and be aware the tribe charges $30.98 including tax (per person) for a bus tour that stops at only two view points. In my opinion the cost is WAY too high for a view of the canyon that is missing the spectacular colors you will find at either the North or South Rims of the Grand Canyon National Park. Issues associated with the west rim scenery go beyond colors ... the formations up close are essentially the same color as those at a greater distance and you simply don't see the "visual punch" that the "real" Grand Canyon NPs (either the north or south rims) offer.

I was shooting a Joshua Tree forest (1000 year old forest) near the area and decided, against my better judgment, to tour the "West Rim". Regardless of the high prices, lack of color associated with the West Rim, and the poorly maintained dirt road, the Joshua Tree forest along the way is worth the trip. Here is the URL to a gallery of pictures I've taken in the Joshua Tree forest (this is the best forest of Joshua Trees I've found in Arizona):
https://pbase.com/jkurkjia/joshua_tree_forest
Simply copy and paste the URL into your browser's "address bar" and click on "go".

IMPORTANT, please note ... whenever you visit a Pbase gallery for the first time, or if you have clicked on a size smaller than "original size" while visiting this or any other Pbase gallery, please be sure to click on "original" size, otherwise you will be presented with a low quality JPEG as versus the high quality JPEG (the size doesn't change, only the quality level of the JPEG compression); you only have to do this once, on the very first picture you look at.

Alternatively, on the very first picture you can add "/original" to the URL in the address bar and hit "refresh" or "go" as the case may be; again, you only have to do this once (on the very first picture). This "/original to the URL" approach is the sure-fire/no-mistake/best way to ensure you will see the highest quality JPEG presentation.
