Oatman & The Route-66 Byway

Oatman, Arizona is a tourist town, sort of a gold mining ghost town that didn't die. Like all tourist towns there are a bunch of stores selling trinkets and carrots. Carrots? Yup, carrots to feed the wild burros running all over the town; these wild burros are the main attraction in town. When the gold miners abandoned the town they also left behind their burros; some how, on their own, the burros thrived enough to produce the descendent's we see today. It is hard to photograph the burrows because if you show them any interest at all they come right up to you looking for carrots and make it hard for you to "back up" far (and fast) enough to take a picture. Although wild, the burrows are VERY friendly and love a little pat on the head.

Oatman is on the Byway, the really "old" part of Route 66. Route 66 was rebuilt to create a flatter (and safe to drive) stretch of road and the town of Oatman was left standing all by itself to shrink and die but somehow managed to survive. Driving from Kingman, Arizona to Oatman one has to pass through narrow winding roads that snake through a mountain pass. This gallery shows what you might expect to see if you drive to Oatman and walk around the town. Although Oatman is in Arizona don't expect "Grand Canyon" type of scenery. The scenery you see in this gallery is certainly not colorful but is very typical of what you might see while driving through most of Arizona (especially in high desert country). If your heart is/was set on "Grand Canyon" like scenery just go to my National Parks Gallery and you will see plenty of "colorful" scenery there.

IMPORTANT, please note ... whenever you visit a Pbase gallery for the first time, or if you have clicked on a size smaller than "original size" while visiting this or any other Pbase gallery, please be sure to click on "original" size, otherwise you will be presented with a low quality JPEG as versus the high quality JPEG (the size doesn't change, only the quality level of the JPEG compression); you only have to do this once, on the very first picture you look at.

Alternatively, on the very first picture you can add "/original" to the URL in the address bar and hit "refresh" or "go" as the case may be; again, you only have to do this once (on the very first picture). This "/original to the URL" approach is the sure-fire/no-mistake/best way to ensure you will see the highest quality JPEG presentation.
