Noodle Thickness

These shaving/noodles were from a saw with rakers set at 0.015" lower then the cutters. They are from an 18" green alder log.
The range of thickness is from 0.022" to 0.092". It seems that the average thickness is in the range of 0.040" to about 0.065". If all were thicker and showing whiskers on one or both sides that would be an indication that the rakers should be shorter. If all were thin with no whiskers it would be an indication that then rakers should be longer.

Things that effect the thickness of noodles:
The softer the wood the more the cutters will cut in and the thicker the noodles will be.
The smaller the log the more the cutters will cut in and the thicker the noodles will be.
The sharper the cutters the more the cutters will cut in and the thicker the noodles will be.
The more down pressure on the saw the more the cutters will cut in and the thicker the noodles will be.
The harder the wood the less the cutters will cut in and the thinner the noodles will be.
The larger the log the less the cutters will cut in and the thinner the noodles will be.
The the duller and blunter the cutters are the less the cutters will cut in and the thinner the noodles will be.
The less down pressure the less the cutters will cut in and the thinner the noodles will be.
The shorter the rakers are then the cutters the thinner the noodles will be.
The longer the rakers are the thicker the noodles will be and may start to show whiskers from pulling uncut wood.
If the saw was ran with the saw circle and all the teeth in contact with the wood the noddles would tend to be thinner then if the saw just contacted a small part of the log at a time.

THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT EFFECT THE THICKNESS OF THE NOODLES!

See "How a Crosscut Saw Cuts" to see why whiskers start to show on one side only:
