Mag Post Oiler Modification

I have read with interest of folks adding a scoop or deflector to a standard mag post oiler to increase the flow of oil to the front of a Model T engine. However, I have never found any details, photos or flow measurements from a modified mag post oiler. We all know that there are many ways to get more oil to the front of the engine. The Texas T’s high volume hogshead scoop type oiler puts out a great amount of oil but I was not that interested in cutting a large hole in the hogshead so I modified the standard mag post oiler on my 1926 Model T.

My T was not running before I modified the oiler so I have no flow measurements from the original oiler. Texas T Parts did some flow rate test on their high flow oiler and an original mag post oiler. They measured over one gallon per minute at a fast idle with their high volume oiler and 15 minutes per gallon with the original mag post oiler.

I ran a static pressure test on my modified mag post oiler using a clear tubing attached to the mag post. I measured 10 inches of head at a slow idle and about 3 feet of oil pressure at a fast idle. Texas T reported no static pressure test so I have no way of knowing what kind of pressure the original or their high flow system will put out. However it is clear that with the pressure head I measured that my oiler will push oil to the front of the engine no matter what grade the car is climbing.

I then measured the flow rate at a fast idle and got a full flow out of a 3/8” ID hose. I measured a little over 1 ½ cups in 14 seconds (37 sec/qt or about 2 ½ minutes/gal). I‘m pleased with the results of the flow test and feel that plenty of oil will be delivered to the front of the engine without any major modifications to the original Model T. I got six times more oil out of my modified oiler then Texas T measured in their original mag post oiler.

Although not a direct comparison in the same engine I would guess that the results are in the ball park. To summarize, using Texas T and my data:

Original mag post oiler 15 min/gal Static pressure ?
My modified mag post 2 ½ min/gal Static pressure 10” to 36”
Texas T High Volume 1 min/gal Static pressure ?
