Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada

I was photographing the avalanches (from a distance) coming down the various chutes on Mount Edith Cavell when I noticed this beautiful conifer nearby with these gorgeous purple seed cones. I'm no arborist so I don't know for sure what variety this is, and I'd love to know! Anyway, I was quite smitten with their color and just had to get some shots to share.

UPDATE (10/17/2011). I agree with my guest's comments believing this is an Engelmann's spruce (Picea engelmannii).

Beautiful tree. It's a spruce, but I'm not completely sure which species. In Jasper NP there are three: black, white, and Engelmann's. My best guess is Engelmann's spruce (Picea engelmannii) based on the characteristics I can see here.
