Babyshoe Pass
A slightly wrong choice of roads put us on US Forest Service road 23 instead of 25 on our way back home from a weekend trip to Eastern Washington. Both roads go from the Columbia River (which is the Washington/Oregon border) north to the town of Randle (very near to Mount Rainier National Park). Both roads are quite beautiful and worth the drive. However, 25 is paved all the way and 23 is not quite as smooth. We were in our 2-door roadster which doesn't do potholes and washboards very well but we managed to make it through the worst of it not too bad.
Babyshoe pass is on USFS road 23, and I have no idea how it got its name, but everytime I do manage to come this way there are always different baby shoes attached to the sign.
BTW, USFS road 25 is a very nice road, any car can easily make it when its free of snow. In fact, its from this road you can access the east side of Mount Saint Helens up to Windy Ridge and get a spectacular view of the crater; much better than from Johnston ridge.
