Lyndhurst, a Gothic Revival mansion designed in 1838 by Alexander Jackson Davis, was the residence at one time or another
of former New York City mayor William Paulding, merchant George Merritt and railroad tycoon Jay Gould.
It was named after the Linden trees that were planted on the estate.
