The Fairhaven Beech. The tree was brought from an estate in Fairhaven, MA via a boat across Long Island Sound and transported to Planting Fields in 1915. You can read more about it at http://www.plantingfields.org/ourstory/history/LI1913.cfm.
As you can see by the lack of leaves in the upper branches, the tree was dying when I took this picture. The tree has since been removed and a new much smaller tree propagated from the Fairhaven Beech has been planted.
