We began our 6-day journey through Paria on Saturday, April 24. We found backpacking through the canyon was not as difficult as some of the mountain trips we've experienced. Canyoneering is much easier on the feet...hiked all but 6 miles in sandals and running shoes.
Our first night's camp was at mile 7.7, just 0.4 mile downstream from Buckskin Gulch Confluence. The overnight was convenient for the next day's exploration of Buckskin Gulch, from the confluence 2 miles upstream to the boulder jam.
The second overnight was at mile 12.3, across from Big Spring. The spring was convenient for cooking and filling up for the next day's hike.
Third overnight was at mile 18.3, just about 1 mile downstream from Judd Hollow Pump.
The fourth night's camp was at Shower Spring, near mile 21.8. Last spring until the trailhead. Long, hot day.
The fifth overnight was at mile 31.7, just a ¼ mile downstream from the Petroglyphs. No springs at this site. Experienced strong valley winds (gusts to 40-50 mph) during the night the pulled two of the tent stakes in the sand and collapsed the foot-end of the tent.
Last day, Thursday, took us to Lee's Ferry Trailhead at mile 38.5 Enjoyed the light packs. Good hike, good company!
