View map fullscreen Mt Massive (14,421'), Standard Route

If you decide to "climb" Mt Massive, you'll have the distinct honor of climbing the 3rd highest peak in the continental US (lower 48). But, not much "climbing" on Mt Massive, since it is an endurance walk-up and nothing technical.....14 miles round-trip, 4,450' elevation gain. One long day hike.

On the way up, you'll get to see Massive's neighbor 5 mi.s to the south, Mt. Elbert, which is 61' shy of being the highest summit in the lower 48. You'll also see the mining town of Leadville, 11 mi.s to the northeast. Leadville has the distinction of being the highest incorporated city in the US, elevation 10,152'.

You'll also see a silver ribbon flowing from north to south....the Arkansas river. The head water of the Arkansas is 20 mi.s northeast of Mt. Massive's summit.
