2009 Trip to England, 6-7 August

We visited Godmanchester, a town near where we lived in Huntingdon, Cambs in the late 70's. We loved the village and our children loved playing in the park.

We drove to some villages around my childhood home in Finchingfield, Essex. We lucked out and found some nice weather and had a very good Ploughman’s at the Fox on the green.

I would encourage everyone to visit Finchingfield at least once to see if they agree with my opinion that it is one of the most picturesque villages in Britain.

We also visited the church at Lt Samford, nearby and the Vicarage. The Rev. Wyatt was the vicar at Lt. Samford and my parents rented a flat on the top floor of the Vicarage where we lived in 1958; I loved it. It's now been converted to a family home.

We spent most of the rest of the day driving around the local Essex countryside. I can recommend photo stops at Thaxted and Saffron Walden as well as Finchingfield.

Godmanchester was first chartered by King John in 1212, though it had been a market town and royal manor for some years. There is archaeological evidence of Celtic and earlier habitation prior to the establishment of a key Roman town and a Mansio (inn), so the area has probably been continuously occupied for more than 2000 years. This was near where we lived in Huntindon and we used to visit it often. Our boys use to play in the park. We loved it.
