2006-10-14 Day trip to upstate South Carolina

2006-10-14 Day trip to upstate South Carolina. Visited a thick group of Spiranthes cernua and a few stands of Aplectrum hyemale. The S. cernua was more numerous in this area than I had ever seen it. It is growing on a granite bald on the Blue Ridge escarpment in about 2 inches of dirt. It is precariously situated on a sloping rock face, but has held up OK for the last four or five years that I've been photographing it. The Aplectrum hyemale site is really three or four sites in the same "nature park". The new leaves have been up for about a week, and the fruit is about ready to split. I counted more than twenty leaves where I saw only about a dozen last year. That's good. A few steps away from the Aplectrum hyemale, I found numerous Tipularia discolor with new leaves, and a few clumps of Goodyera pubescens plants. Pretty good find for a short hike in the woods...
