The most abundant Mexican source of silver for the Spanish crown for a few hundred years, Guanajuato has continued to play a pivotal role in the country's history. The Alhondiga, its granary cum fortress, was the site of a bloody battle near the start of the 1810 Mexican revolution. The government-sponsored project to paint the buildings in exuberant colors has made this ravine-hugging town pure eye candy, and the university ensures that its intense little triangle of a zocalo hops every night. |
