Hinchinbrooke Country Park at its most beautiful time, the leaves are turning but the winds have not yet turned the trees into skeletons.
Hinchingbrooke Country Park opened in 1989, its priorities being for public recreation and education, as well as conservation and wildlife. It was originally part of a large estate with Hinchingbrooke House at the centre. The house itself is in the main Tudor, with the remains of the early 13th century nunnery. The house and grounds were given to the Cromwell family in 1538 by Henry 8th on the dissolution of the monasteries. Oliver Cromwell played here as a child. The estate was subsequently owned by the Montagu family (Earl of Sandwich). Cambridgeshire County Council brought the full estate in 1962. Between 1963 and 1981 gravel was extracted, with the contract including an agreement to reinstate the area for public use upon completion.
