Sheela na gig

Kilpeck, Herefordshire

One of the many medieval carvings along the roofline of Kilpeck. The Sheela Na Gig is a stone carving of a woman holding open her vagina. Such carvings are found in medieval churches all over Europe. There are various theories for the role of the Sheela Na Gig statues - see the wikpedia article for an overview.

We have them in Ireland too - didn't know they were found elsewhere in Europe.
