Taken standing on a platform, that was obligingly placed below the west window, to give me some extra elevation!
Most of the structure of the abbey is Norman and this can be best appreciated in the nave which is dominated by 14 columns, each 9 metres high and around 2 metres in diameter. There are rounded Romanesque arches between the columns. The ceiling with its rib vaulting is more modern (14th century) and lower than originally planned as the first ceiling was damaged by fire. This lower ceiling partly obscures the windows of the clerestory. In this distance in this view is the rood screen with the high altar beyond. To the right of the picture is the ornate wooden font cover, suspended from the ceiling.
