Net vaulting above the quire

Tewkesbury Abbey

The abbey has a lot of history associated with it. One of the key battles of the Wars of the Roses took place at Tewkesbury on 4th May 1471. The victory of the Yorkists over the Lancastrians lead to the crowning of Edward IV as King of England. The net vaulting above the quire in this picture has the sun at its centre – the emblem of King Edward IV.

Beautiful lighting and great details. This must have been the apex of Gothic vaulting. "V"
